An aspect about the law of attraction that has received a great deal of attention is the ways to set out your intentions, or how we ask for what we want. In my opinion, this is the least important part of the creative process, simply because we can’t avoid asking. We ask for what we want whether we like it or not.
We all give some thought to what we want to create in our life. This is ok, but we must be careful not to get obsessed about the ways we believe the end results can be achieved, and instead we must focus on the end results we seek to achieve.
Content
What we think about the things we want is nothing else that the content of our intentions. We try to make sense of our feelings and translate our life purpose into ideas and words, and then, hopefully, into action.
This is natural and if you feel drawn to doing so, there is not a reason to avoid it; as long as you know how to build a positive, accurate statement that comprise your true intentions. The law of attraction will manifest into our lives that which we focus upon, as long as our vibration is a match with the content of our intentions. In other word, if the content of your intentions is to create wealth, but your vibration is rooted in scarcity, there is no way you can change your circumstances, and you shouldn’t seek for more or better content, but try to shift your vibration.
Content Can Be A Two Edged Sword
Maybe you want to help people. It’s ok to be inclined to certain areas, but don’t get too specific or you will be closing doors before they are even open. Or maybe you want to be wealthier. You feel your current financial situation is displeasing and you would appreciate to have more financial freedom.
Let’s see some examples of what a flawed statement looks like:
I am certain that my life purpose is to help others and this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. And I know doctors help people; therefore, I want to be a Doctor.
Yes, she wants to help others, but to think medicine is the only way to help is to be shortsighted. If she feels a preference to be a doctor, then she should go for it. But maybe she actually could be happier by being an acupuncturist, or a psychologist or a professional speaker.
I live in scarcity and I would like to have financial freedom to take better care of my family. And I have noted that some people win the lottery and acquire a great deal of wealth; therefore, my intention is to win the lottery.
He wants to help his family, but the only effort he is willing to make is walking to the store to buy tickets. There is nothing wrong with buying lottery as long as it feels like what it is: a game. If you are betting on it to take care of your family and doing nothing more, then not winning the lottery is just an excused you’re using to validate your resistance to improve your life. If you really want to take care of your family, financial well-being is only one of the many things you would focus and winning the lottery wouldn’t help you with any of the other aspects.
I live in scarcity and I would like to have the financial freedom to do more often the things I love, like travelling. If that product I just launched last week goes viral it would represent a great deal of money coming into my life and then I could do all the things I want. So, my intention is that the product sells extremely well.
Much like the second example, she is focusing on the means and not on the end results. It would be better if she would focus on having the opportunity to travel despite her financial situation. And regarding the creation of physical reality, if she would focus on the end results and the product developed would have been born out of joyful action, the results wouldn’t matter all that much. The funny thing about creating by joyful action is that we enjoy so much the time we spent in this state that this is actually the best reward we could ask for. There is no resistance when we are in the zone and the quality of the products or ideas that comes out of this is superior to anything that is created any other way.
All of the above lines of thought are not inaccurate. If the first person gets to be a Doctor could certainly help people. In the second case if the person wanting to take care of his family wins the lottery, could fulfill his intention. And in the third example, of course a well sold product could represent a great deal of financial resources that could then be used to experience all the things the person desire. But do not confuse our true intentions with the ways we believe our intentions should materialize.
Better Statements
Let’s see:
- I am certain that my life purpose is to help others and that is what I want to do as long as it feels good. I know doctors help people and I acknowledge this is an option to fulfil my desires to serve others, but I also acknowledge that there are other ways to help those around me. My intention is to find the best way to help others and develop the tools I need to execute such endeavors and to be able to do so through joyful action.
- I acknowledge that my current financial situation is not a match with my desires and I take full responsibility for this, because I understand that I am the creator of my own reality. A scarcity situation does not allow me to take care of certain needs of my family as I would like, therefore my intention is to find the way to generate wealth for my love ones and for myself and that money don’t be a relevant factor to live a joyful life.
- I want to travel and to know other places, cultures and people. Therefore, my intention is to find the resources needed for this to happen.
These last statements acknowledge the physical situation we are in; to deny it is to cause unnecessary resistance. However, and unlike the first version of the statements, the intention is focused on the end desired result and not in our present situation or in the ways we believe the results would have to be achieved.
End Results are not Actually the End
It’s important to understand that by “end result” I’m talking about the true desire we hold at a given moment. It doesn’t mean this is all that we can or would do in our lives. It wouldn’t be rare that once we achieved our “end results” our desires point to somewhere else or get more specific.
After all, life is everlasting change.
When is OK to be Specific?
Be as specific about your desires as long as it feels good. The problem with specify is that we usually do it out of ignorance. However, if you certainly know, without any shadow of doubt, that you want to do, to be or to have something in specific, by all means go ahead and put all your emotions in the pursue of it. But do it as long as the chase feels good. At the moment negative emotions arise, it’s time to hold your horses and maybe zoom out a little bit.
More than once in my life I have thought that I wanted to achieve a goal and instead I have achieved something different, good, but different. Back in the old days I couldn’t avoid going home with a bittersweet feeling about those not pursued successes and wondering why the ones I had invested a great deal of effort just didn’t materialize. Today I understand that even when I wasn’t aware of it, my actions were directed to the means I believed were the best ways to achieve my end results, but my emotions were correctly aligned with my true intentions. It was like the universe telling me: “You fool, get out of the way and let me do the job.” And it does a REALLY good job when you allow it.
The Rolling Stones were partially right: “You can’t always get what you want (you can, actually), but if you try, sometimes, you find you get what you need.”
How Often Do I Have to Ask?
This is largely subjective. The truth is that the asking happens anyway, even when we are not aware of it. We cannot avoid asking for improvement. Additionally, law of attraction pays no attention to the content, but only to your emotional vibration. All the content of the world won’t make a any difference if your emotional vibration differs from your intentions.
Some people rearrange their intentions once a year, others one a month and there are people who review it every day. It’s a matter of preference, but your meter should always be the way you feel when you do it.
If reviewing your emotions every day makes you feel empowered and motivated, then this is the right thing to do. As soon as the daily review starts to produce anxiety, stress or disappointment, it means you are focusing on the absence of your intention, instead of the intentions itself and you will be better leaving it off alone.
The bottom line here is that it doesn’t really matter. Our universe is not a crowded coffee shop whose waiter will forget your order if you don’t remind him every day.
3 Popular Methods
The way you chose to assess and review your intentions, it’s also a very personal decision. This also happens subconsciously anyway, but to review the content of your intentions can be extremely helpful to generate powerful positive emotions.
Some people are great with visualizations. Others prefer daily affirmations and other find that meditation is the best way. It really depends on your preference and how each method makes you feel.
Personally, I prefer visualization, since I don’t like affirmations and I’m not all that good with meditation.
The bottom line about our intentions is that we must give a lot more importance to our emotions than to the content of our thoughts. Your emotions are never fooled, but your thoughts can be easily deceived. Trust your emotions and the path ahead of you will undoubtedly unfold.
Very good post. We have to think from the end and not lose ourselves in defining the journey.
Julio, you are on a roll! 🙂
True. How & When? are the tasks of Universe. Universe is capable of manifesting your desires in a perfect way & at perfect time. When I ask for any desire, I leave HOW & WHEN to the Universe not only because that is what is appropriate but also because Universe manifests desires in most beautiful surprises and I like surprises:-))))
